Celebrating Simply You

Black Girls Rock!

This Saturday, I received a call to attend the taping of Black Girls Rock!.

Hearing of Black Girls Rock! (BGR) and recently meeting the founder- Beverly Bond, at the Uniquely You Summit (UYS) I was excited to attend!

I love any organization reaching out to girls, and the realization is there are more needed to uplift and inspire our young black girls.  So, kudos to BGR and UYS for their commitment to black girls!

After our departure (Philly to New York), being graced by the toll collector (went thru E-ZPass w/o an E-ZPass), and finally taking a seat in Paradise Theater (security was TRIPPING), I have to say I enjoyed the hour and a half of empowerment.

As we took our seats, Susan L. Taylor (Essence Magazine) was receiving the “Inspiration” Award.  And, as she gave her acceptance speech, I understood all the more why she was being honored.  Here are two quotes from Ms. Taylor…

“Each of us is a Divine Original.”

“Hands that serve are holier than lips that pray.”

Followed by Susan L. Taylor was Alicia Keys, receiving the “Rock Star” Award.  And, with A. Keys new song Girl on Fire and her continuous efforts with Keep a Child Alive, I’ll have to say another award well deserved.  Here is a quote from A. Keys as she accepted her award…

To Every Black Girl: “Everything you want to be, you already are, you are just on the path to discovering it.”

Performances by Ciara with surprise appearance by Missy Elliott.  Men gracing the stage for the first time ever, Joan Clayton, well Tracee Ellis Ross (co-host) being styled as usual and SWV singing my favorite song “Weak,” I’ll have to say not only do Black Girls Rock!, but so did the evening.

Of course the night could not end without a word from the one and only- Beverly Bond.  Here are some quotes I took away from her message to black girls…

“Women You are a Solution.”

“You are a Relevant Contribution to this World.”

“We cannot just tell them they ROCK, we have to teach them how to ROCK!”

To all Black Girls:

In watching this years Black Girls Rock!, I hope you walk away not only believing, but knowing that you have the power within to be all that you are!  You were created for a reason, a purpose and as Ms. Bond said, “a solution.”  Never allow the color of your skin, the texture of your hair, the shape of your hips to define who you are.  You are God’s Girl, made in spirit to dwell amongst and to be an inspiration to many.  Remember YOU ROCK and YOUR BLACK is BEAUTIFUL!

To Beverly Bond:

Congratulations on another year of Black Girls Rock!, and here is to many more!  You Rock!  Most importantly- Thank You for allowing Shaleah and I to be part of the evening.

Check out Black Girls Rock! on November 4, 2012 on BET at 7pm
